Massive loss for Memphis athletic department
Reports arising from Sunday’s turnstile attendance figures claim that a mammoth pay of $800,000 from the Memphis Grizzlies was missed out entirely by the athletic department of The University of Memphis. They lost such a major amount due to poor attendance at the men’s basketball games, this past season. It marks the first time since Memphis started playing their home games in FedExForum that the institute didn’t receive money from the reputed Grizzlies in accordance to the lease agreement.
Memphis has an average of 4583 fans over a period of 19 regular season home games. According to the lease agreement, the Grizzlies owe Memphis an amount of $800,000 if the school has an average of 10000 fans or more. If the attendance figures stand between 6000 and 10000, the school will receive a reduced payment, which will be proportional to the shortfall. However, if the attendance drops below 6000, Memphis will get no money at all and if it happens for 2 back to back seasons, the Grizzlies can terminate the lease of the school.
