RAPTORS’ UJIRI ON IBAKA: ‘OUR TEAM NEEDED A BOOST’

Serge Ibaka appears at the perfect moment, as the Raptors were wilting, facing a defeat of 10 of their last 14 games. With entanglement about the club’s direction spreading out of the dressing room and into the public premises, expressed by Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan, the franchise’s twin icons.

“He’s a guy that we’ve always had an eye on,” said (Raptors president Masai) Ujiri, who has known Ibaka, 27, since he has taken charge against the Congolese big man in the African junior championships a decade ago. “But I think our team needed a boost, to be honest, and we’re at that point where I think everybody knows, it’s not rocket science, that [a starting power forward] was a missing link on our team.”

Anthony Davis stated his loyalty to the Pelicans organisation and maintained his liability to the city of New Orleans during a conference meet with international media on Tuesday afternoon.

NBA D-LEAGUE WILL NOW BE CALLED NBA G-LEAGUE

In the 2017-18 season, the NBA Development League will be called the NBA Gatorade League (NBA G-League) as a component of a multiyear expanded partnership declared by the National Basketball Association (NBA) and Gatorade. This marks the first time a U.S. professional sports league has named a privileged partner.

 

LUE: ‘WE CAN’T RUN LEBRON INTO THE GROUND’ WITH LOVE OUT

“We’re still going to go about our plan,” head coach Tyronn Lue said Tuesday morning before the team’s action in Minnesota. “We can’t run LeBron (James) into the ground because Kevin (Love) is out. Guys got to step up and be ready to play and the games that we discussed (internally) that he can possibly be out in March, then we’ll look forward to that.”

GRIZZLIES TO SIGN TONEY DOUGLAS FOR REST OF THE SEASON?

Grizzlies coach David Fizdale has tested rookie Wade Baldwin IV, Andrew Harrison and Tony Allen at backup point guard for the duration of the season. But (Toney) Douglas, who is on his second 10-day contract in Memphis, emerges to be the keeper at the position.
